Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about CNC machining, quoting, tolerances, lead times, and our services. Don't see your question? Call us at (856) 207-2495.

General

  • Nitro Custom Works is located at 425 N. Grove St., Berlin, NJ 08009, serving Burlington County, Camden County, Gloucester County, and Salem County as well as the greater Philadelphia metro area. Call us at (856) 207-2495 for directions.

  • Nitro Custom Works offers CNC milling, CNC turning, automotive machine shop services (cylinder head resurfacing, valve seat cutting, guide replacement), custom gear machining, and manual machining. We handle both production runs and single one-off parts.

  • No. Nitro Custom Works accepts orders for a single part. We welcome one-offs, prototypes, and replacement parts. You should not need to order 50 pieces of something you need one of.

  • We work with both local drop-off customers and customers who ship parts to us. We can ship finished parts back via UPS or FedEx. Contact us at (856) 207-2495 or nitrocwc@gmail.com to arrange shipping on either end.

Quoting & Ordering

  • Send your STEP or IGES file (or a dimensioned PDF drawing) to nitrocwc@gmail.com, or call us at (856) 207-2495. Include material, quantity, and any critical tolerances. We typically turn around quotes within 1–2 business days. You can also use our quote request form.

  • We accept STEP (.step, .stp), IGES (.igs, .iges), DXF, DWG, STL, and PDF files. STEP is preferred for 3D parts — it carries the most complete geometry. See the full capabilities page for details.

  • Yes, for simple parts we can work from a sample or a photograph with measurements. Bring the part in or describe it over the phone at (856) 207-2495. More complex parts with tight tolerances or critical fits will need a dimensioned drawing to ensure we make it right.

  • Lead times depend on current shop workload and job complexity. Standard jobs typically run 1–2 weeks from approval. For time-sensitive work, call us first at (856) 207-2495 — we can often tell you same-day what our current schedule looks like and whether rush is possible.

Tolerances, Materials & Quality

  • Nitro Custom Works holds tolerances from ±0.010" for standard non-critical features down to ±0.001" for demanding precision fits. Most general machining work runs at ±0.002" to ±0.005". Achievable tolerance depends on material, geometry, and part size — discuss your requirements at quoting.

    ClassToleranceTypical Use
    Standard±0.010"Non-critical features
    Close±0.005"General machining
    Precision±0.002"Bearing and press fits
    High Precision±0.001"Demanding fits
  • We routinely machine aluminum (6061, 7075, 2024), carbon and alloy steel (1018, 1045, 4140, 4340), stainless steel (304, 316, 17-4 PH), brass (360), bronze (932, 954), cast iron (gray and ductile), and engineering plastics (Delrin/acetal, nylon 6/66, UHMW). Contact us about less common materials — we can often handle them with the right tooling. Full materials list on the capabilities page.

  • Nitro Custom Works is not currently ISO 9001 certified. What we offer is direct machinist accountability: the person who makes your part is the person who inspects it with calibrated micrometers, bore gauges, and thread gauges before it ships. Parts that don't pass inspection are remachined or scrapped — not shipped.

  • Material certifications (mill certs) are available on request for applicable jobs. Let us know at quoting if you need documentation and we'll confirm whether it's available for the material and quantity you're ordering.

Lead Times

  • Standard CNC milling and turning typically takes 1–2 weeks. Rush turnaround of 1–3 business days is sometimes available. Specific service lead times:

    ServiceTypical Lead Time
CNC milling / turning (standard)1–2 weeks
CNC milling / turning (rush)1–3 business days
    Cylinder head resurface3–5 business days
    Full valve job5–7 business days
    Custom gear machining1–2 weeks
    Prototype (simple parts)3–5 business days
  • Yes, rush turnaround is sometimes available — typically 1–3 business days for CNC parts. Call us at (856) 207-2495 to discuss your deadline. We'll give you a realistic answer rather than a date we can't keep.

Automotive & Cylinder Heads

  • Yes. We do cylinder head machining on both aluminum and cast iron heads — resurfacing, valve seat cutting and replacement, valve guide service, and related work. Aluminum requires different setup than iron; we handle both. Call (856) 207-2495 to discuss your specific head.

  • Common signs of a warped cylinder head include coolant in the oil (milky appearance on the dipstick), oil in the coolant (foamy or discolored overflow tank), overheating, white exhaust smoke, or a blown head gasket that fails repeatedly. We check flatness with a precision straightedge and feeler gauge — bring your head in and we can tell you exactly where it stands before you commit to resurfacing.

  • Yes. In addition to standard resurfacing and valve jobs, we offer performance head prep: bowl blending, port clean-up, gasket matching, and multi-angle valve jobs for improved flow. Call us at (856) 207-2495 to discuss what your build requires.

Custom Gears

  • Yes. Nitro Custom Works regularly machines replacement gears from samples of worn or broken originals. Bring in the old gear and we'll measure the tooth form (diametral pitch, pressure angle, tooth count, bore, face width) and machine a new one in aluminum, steel, or other material as appropriate. Call (856) 207-2495 to discuss your situation.

  • We machine spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, worm gears, internal ring gears, timing pulleys, and sprockets. We can also machine adjustable cam gears for engine timing applications. See the full list on our custom gear machining page.

  • To quote a custom gear, we need: number of teeth, diametral pitch (DP) or module, pressure angle, bore diameter, hub dimensions, face width, material, and quantity. If you have the old gear or a drawing, that's the easiest starting point. Without a sample or drawing, we can help you reverse-engineer a worn gear — call us to discuss.
