Custom Gear Machining in South Jersey, NJ

Billet aluminum and steel cam gears, timing gears, spur gears, and specialty gear components machined from scratch. One-off parts and small production runs for performance builds and custom applications.

Custom Gear Machining

When the Gear You Need Doesn't Exist — We Make It

Custom gear machining is one of our signature capabilities at Nitro Custom Works. We've machined billet cam gears, adjustable timing gears, custom spur gears, and specialty drive components for performance engine builds, custom fabrication projects, and industrial applications throughout South Jersey.

Whether you're building a track car that needs a billet adjustable cam gear, looking to reproduce a discontinued gear for a restoration project, or designing a custom drive system that needs a specific tooth count and pitch — we can machine it. We work from your drawings, from a sample part, or from a description of what you need.

All gear work is produced on CNC equipment, inspected for dimensional accuracy, and checked for correct tooth geometry before delivery. No minimum order — we machine single gears and small batches with equal care.

Gear Types

Gears We Machine

Cam Gears

Fixed and adjustable billet cam gears for performance engine builds. Machined in 6061 and 7075 aluminum. We produce cam gears that match your OEM specification or custom cam phasing requirements.

🔄

Timing Gears

Timing gear sets and individual timing gears for cam drive systems. Accurate tooth form, correct pitch, and proper bore sizing are critical — we get them right.

⚙️

Spur Gears

Standard spur gears for power transmission, speed reduction, and custom drive applications. Machined to any tooth count and pitch in aluminum, steel, or brass.

🔧

Adjustable Cam Gears

Two-piece adjustable cam gears with slotted outer rings and fixed hubs for dial-in cam timing. A precision performance component that makes a real difference in engine tuning.

🔁

Replacement Gears

Discontinued or unavailable production gears reproduced from originals. Bring in your worn or broken gear — we'll measure it and make an accurate replacement.

📐

Custom Drive Components

Sprockets, idlers, hubs, and other custom gear-train components for machinery, equipment, and special applications. We work from your specs or help you figure out what you need.

Materials

Gear Materials We Machine

Material choice for a custom gear depends on the load, speed, and operating environment. We machine the most common gear materials and can advise on material selection if you're unsure.

  • 6061-T6 Aluminum — Lightweight, great for cam gears and low-to-moderate load applications. Excellent machinability.
  • 7075-T6 Aluminum — Higher strength aluminum for demanding performance applications.
  • 4140 Steel — Strong, tough steel for higher-load gear applications where aluminum isn't sufficient.
  • Stainless Steel — Corrosion-resistant gears for wet or chemical environments.
  • Brass — Common for worm gear applications, decorative gears, and low-speed mechanisms.
What We Need From You

How to Order a Custom Gear

To quote a custom gear, we need:

InformationNotes
Tooth CountNumber of teeth on the gear
Diametral Pitch (DP)Teeth per inch of pitch diameter
Pressure AngleTypically 14.5° or 20°
Bore DiameterSize of the center hole
Hub DimensionsIf different from gear face
Face WidthThickness of the gear
MaterialAluminum, steel, brass, etc.
QuantityEven one piece — no minimum

Don't have all of this? If you have a sample gear, bring it in — we'll measure it.

FAQ

Custom Gear Machining — Questions & Answers

Yes. We produce single custom gears as well as small batches. If you have a drawing or a sample gear you need reproduced, send us the details — tooth count, pitch, pressure angle, bore size, and outside diameter — and we'll quote the job. For a replacement gear, bring in the original and we'll measure and reproduce it.
We machine spur gears, cam gears, timing gears, and custom gear profiles. Our primary capability is precision CNC machining of gear blanks and gear profiles in aluminum and steel, including cam gears, adjustable cam gears, and specialty timing components for performance applications. Contact us about your specific gear type to confirm feasibility.
Billet 6061 and 7075 aluminum are the most common materials for cam gears and lightweight performance applications. For higher-load applications, we machine gears from 4140 steel or stainless steel. Brass is also available for certain applications. Material choice depends on the load, speed, and environment the gear operates in — we can advise if you're unsure.
Often yes. Bring in the original gear — even if it's worn or broken — along with any information about what it's from. We can reverse-engineer the tooth count, pitch, and key dimensions to produce an accurate replacement. For very worn gears, we may need to work from specifications or a partial undamaged section to determine the original geometry.
An adjustable cam gear allows the camshaft timing to be independently set from the crankshaft, enabling precise cam phasing adjustment for performance applications. It typically features a slotted outer ring and a fixed inner hub that allows a few degrees of adjustment. We've machined billet adjustable cam gears for performance builds and can produce them in aluminum or steel to your specifications.
