Custom Gear Machining in South Jersey, NJ
Billet aluminum and steel cam gears, timing gears, spur gears, and specialty gear components machined from scratch. One-off parts and small production runs for performance builds and custom applications.
When the Gear You Need Doesn't Exist — We Make It
Custom gear machining is one of our signature capabilities at Nitro Custom Works. We've machined billet cam gears, adjustable timing gears, custom spur gears, and specialty drive components for performance engine builds, custom fabrication projects, and industrial applications throughout South Jersey.
Whether you're building a track car that needs a billet adjustable cam gear, looking to reproduce a discontinued gear for a restoration project, or designing a custom drive system that needs a specific tooth count and pitch — we can machine it. We work from your drawings, from a sample part, or from a description of what you need.
All gear work is produced on CNC equipment, inspected for dimensional accuracy, and checked for correct tooth geometry before delivery. No minimum order — we machine single gears and small batches with equal care.
Gears We Machine
Cam Gears
Fixed and adjustable billet cam gears for performance engine builds. Machined in 6061 and 7075 aluminum. We produce cam gears that match your OEM specification or custom cam phasing requirements.
Timing Gears
Timing gear sets and individual timing gears for cam drive systems. Accurate tooth form, correct pitch, and proper bore sizing are critical — we get them right.
Spur Gears
Standard spur gears for power transmission, speed reduction, and custom drive applications. Machined to any tooth count and pitch in aluminum, steel, or brass.
Adjustable Cam Gears
Two-piece adjustable cam gears with slotted outer rings and fixed hubs for dial-in cam timing. A precision performance component that makes a real difference in engine tuning.
Replacement Gears
Discontinued or unavailable production gears reproduced from originals. Bring in your worn or broken gear — we'll measure it and make an accurate replacement.
Custom Drive Components
Sprockets, idlers, hubs, and other custom gear-train components for machinery, equipment, and special applications. We work from your specs or help you figure out what you need.
Gear Materials We Machine
Material choice for a custom gear depends on the load, speed, and operating environment. We machine the most common gear materials and can advise on material selection if you're unsure.
- 6061-T6 Aluminum — Lightweight, great for cam gears and low-to-moderate load applications. Excellent machinability.
- 7075-T6 Aluminum — Higher strength aluminum for demanding performance applications.
- 4140 Steel — Strong, tough steel for higher-load gear applications where aluminum isn't sufficient.
- Stainless Steel — Corrosion-resistant gears for wet or chemical environments.
- Brass — Common for worm gear applications, decorative gears, and low-speed mechanisms.
How to Order a Custom Gear
To quote a custom gear, we need:
| Information | Notes |
|---|---|
| Tooth Count | Number of teeth on the gear |
| Diametral Pitch (DP) | Teeth per inch of pitch diameter |
| Pressure Angle | Typically 14.5° or 20° |
| Bore Diameter | Size of the center hole |
| Hub Dimensions | If different from gear face |
| Face Width | Thickness of the gear |
| Material | Aluminum, steel, brass, etc. |
| Quantity | Even one piece — no minimum |
Don't have all of this? If you have a sample gear, bring it in — we'll measure it.
