Automotive Specialty

The Machine Shop That Understands Performance

Most machine shops treat automotive work as an afterthought. At Nitro Custom Works, it's a specialty. We machine engine components, custom gears, and precision parts for builders who know the difference between a part that's "good enough" and a part that's right.

Our automotive machine shop work covers cylinder head services — resurfacing, valve seat cutting, porting — as well as custom gear machining for cam drives, timing systems, and custom powertrain components. We work with cast iron and aluminum heads, billet aluminum and steel gears, and a range of engine-related components that need real precision, not just a ballpark.

Whether you're rebuilding a daily driver, prepping a performance build, or fabricating custom components for a race application, Nitro Custom Works provides the South Jersey automotive machine shop services that get it done right.

What We Do for Engines & Builds

🔧

Cylinder Head Machining

Resurfacing, valve seat cutting and replacement, valve guide work, and porting for cast iron and aluminum heads. See our dedicated head machining page for full details.

Custom Gear Machining

Billet cam gears, timing gears, and custom drive gears machined from aluminum and steel. Single pieces or small batches. See our gear machining page for specs.

🔩

Engine Component Fabrication

Custom spacers, adapters, standoffs, brackets, and hardware for engine builds. We machine the parts your build needs that you can't find off the shelf.

🏎️

Performance Modifications

Machining work that improves performance: porting, port matching, combustion chamber cleanup, flywheel balancing pads, and custom clearancing work.

🔄

Restoration Machining

Reproduction and replacement parts for vintage and classic vehicles. When the part doesn't exist anymore, we make it. We work from measurements, blueprints, or original worn parts.

🔬

Precision Tolerancing

Engine work requires real precision. We understand clearances, press fits, and interference fits for rotating assemblies. Parts are measured, not guessed.

Our Standards

How We Approach Automotive Machining

Engine components are not generic machined parts — they operate under extreme thermal cycling, pressure, and mechanical stress. We apply the precision standards of CNC machining to automotive work, rather than accepting the casual tolerances that characterize some machine shops.

  • Flatness checked before and after head resurfacing
  • Valve seats cut to proper angle and width specifications
  • Thread quality verified with calibrated gauges
  • All critical dimensions inspected and recorded
  • No shortcuts on setup — we get it right in fewer passes
FAQ

Automotive Machine Shop — Questions & Answers

Nitro Custom Works offers cylinder head resurfacing and decking, valve seat cutting and replacement, valve guide replacement, porting and polishing, custom gear machining (cam gears, timing gears), and custom performance component fabrication in aluminum and steel. We also make custom one-off parts for builds where an off-the-shelf solution doesn't exist.
Yes. We machine both cast iron and aluminum cylinder heads. Aluminum requires different tooling and approach than iron — we have experience with both and understand the different requirements for each material. All heads are checked for flatness before and after machining.
Yes. We work with performance builders, amateur racers, and enthusiasts on ported heads, custom gears, and precision components that go beyond stock specifications. Tell us what you're building and what you're trying to achieve — we'll discuss what's realistic and how we can help.
A cylinder head may need resurfacing if it was overheated, if you experienced a head gasket failure, or if a straightedge check reveals warping beyond manufacturer tolerances (typically 0.004" or less across the length). Visible pitting, erosion, or carbon buildup on the gasket surface is another sign. We can inspect your head and give you an honest assessment.
Turnaround depends on the scope. Single cylinder head resurfacing is typically 3–5 business days. Valve seat and guide work adds to that depending on how many cylinders are involved. Custom gear machining is 1–2 weeks depending on complexity. Call us with your specific project for an accurate timeline — rush turnaround is sometimes available.
